AHFD's HUD Experience Keeps Hospital on Track

For the award-winning Meadows Regional Medical Center, located in Vidalia, Georgia, ensuring it continually met the needs of its community was a challenge. This was due to a 45-year-old facility that was out of date, landlocked, and offered no room for expansion. The solution was a replacement hospital, and MRMC chose AHFD to manage the project from start to finish. AHFD introduced the hospital to the concept of HUD 242 insured mortgages and to a HUD- approved mortgage banker. As a result, MRMC became the first hospital in the state of Georgia to receive an FHA Section 242 insured loan from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This landmark loan, in the amount of $84.76 million, allowed MRMC to move ahead with its vision for the future. MRMC now has a two-story replacement facility with expansion room for two additional floors. It boasts 64 private patient suites, which includes 32 medical/surgical, eight ICU, 12 PCU, and 13LDRP beds. The facility's six surgical suites are among the most advanced in the state, along with 20 emergency treatment rooms for trauma, pediatrics, and cardiac events. Throughout the entire project, which spanned 546 days of construction, AHFD provided project management expertise that gave the hospital the guidance and resources it needed to keep such a large undertaking focused and on budget. MRMC now has a facility in keeping with its mission to advance clinical care and improve the patient experience.

“AHFD has kept costs down and kept the project intact from our initial agreed upon concepts to today's architectural plans. They know how to lead a hospital to a new building economically and rationally without sacrificing vision or quality. I attribute a significant percentage of our success in the planning process to build the building that we need and obtain financing to the efforts of American Health Facilities Development. From Exley Hill and Steve Rutland down to the support staff in the office, I believe that we would not be where we are today without their leadership and commitment. I commend them to anyone considering construction of healthcare projects and believe that they stand head and shoulders above their competition.” — J. Alan Kent, President and CEO, Meadows Regional Medical Center
