AHFD Keeps Four-Story Expansion On Track

It would be the largest construction project ever launched by Fisher-Titus Medical Center - a four-story expansion of its existing hospital including a new inpatient clinical center with associated operational support spaces. Fisher-Titus Executive Vice President and COO Peg Baird realized she needed more than just an architect and contractor - she needed a program manager and a taskmaster. So she chose AHFD.

First, AHFD applied its management and construction experience to develop a realistic $28 million cost estimate (the hospital's original projection was $8 million too low). Next, AHFD brought resources to Fisher-Titus - such as nationally known architects and contractors - who could provide new perspectives to the project. AHFD's John Albert helped the hospital evaluate vendors, even taking the client on job-site visits.

Once the team was assembled, Albert worked closely with Baird and the board to keep construction on schedule, including weekly team meetings at the hospital. Construction was completed in the spring of 2006 - two months early - which freed up $100,000 in overhead costs.

Since then, AHFD has completed Phase 2 of the project, improving the oncology and rehabilitation departments, and is now working on Phase 3 - interior renovations to the IT, administrative services and pharmacy areas.
