VIDALIA, GA (WTOC) - The hospital that serves Toombs and seven surrounding counties announced plans to build a new $75 million campus in Vidalia. Meadows Regional Medical Center will replace its current campus with a larger, modern complex.
The hospital's president and CEO Alan Kent, announced the plans Tuesday afternoon at the hospital's wellness center on Highway 280. The new complex will be built directly across the street.
Kent stated the 70-bed hospital would include all private rooms with sections of the complex like the operating rooms, the emergency room and others designed for expansion. In his announcement, Kent said the oldest parts of the current hospital opened 45 years ago and could not be modernized for less than $16 million. He expects the new hospital to attract up to 20 percent more patients within two years of opening.
"When you improve staff efficiency, improve conditions for staff and patients, that will improve the perceived quality of care and the quality of care too," Kent stated.
Kent said Meadows would request a certificate of need from the state of Georgia by early June. If approved, construction could begin in late 2008 or early 2009 and take 18 months to complete.
With more than 600 employees, Meadows Regional is Toombs County's second largest employer. However, their payroll of $25 million is the county's largest.
