Hundreds of people braved the heat Saturday to see the ribbon cutting ceremony for Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The event featured several short speeches, special music from United Hearts Choir and tours of the new building.

CEO Joe Ierardi and retired CEO Charles Morgan led the roster of speakers. Morgan spoke about the years of effort that went into the project, beginning with the decision that a new facility was needed back in 1984.

“Through cooperation and working together, miracles can happen and dreams can come true,” Morgan said.

The leaders of the project’s construction team also addressed the crowd. David Stewart, an architect from Gresham Smith, said his team had enjoyed being a part of the project. Jim Poole, senior vice president of Robins & Morton, thanked the county for its hospitality.

“We travel all over the country building hospitals; this one was special…because of the citizens of Wayne County,” Poole said.
“I want to thank each and every one of you for making us feel like we are from here.”

Exley Hill, president of American Health Facilities Development, said the project was especially important to him as a Wayne County native.

“I’ve spent the last 28 years going all over the country developing projects like this. It’s very gratifying to be able to come back to my hometown and be a part of this successful project,” Hill said.
