Amery, a lakeside community of about 2,900 has always taken great pride in its medical facilities, but with a new 25-bed, $40 million medical center about to open, folks are doing their best not to boast.
“If you can’t get excited about this, you can’t get excited”, said Mick Karuschak, CEO of the new Amery Regional Medical Center, as he stood at the entrance of the new facility built on almost 29 acres adjoining the Apple River.
The 120,000-square foot facility will serve Amery and about 15-mile radius of the Polk County community including Clear Lake, Deer Park and Turtle Lake.
Most of the funds to build the facility were borrowed, but several foundations contributed – led by a $2 million donation from the Fred C. and Katerine B. Anderson Foundation.
The new hospital will replace the current 80,000-square foot facility, which opened 1956. The city is looking to convert part of the old structure into a public library.
Everything about the facility has been designed to make it more accessible, convenient, efficient and environmentally friendly, Karuschak said. Landscape for wildlife, the grounds will include rain gardens, a raptor nesting area and a river walk. Plants will cover the rooftops to improve the building’s insulation, reduce runoff and add some beauty to otherwise bland surfaces.
